Carla Santos Named Director of EUC
Dr. Carla Santos, a professor in the Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism, has been named director of the European Union Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In her research, Dr. Santos examines communicative practices (from mass mediated narratives to the face-to-face dyad) as a means of addressing the socio-political and cultural impact of tourism on the world's people and cultures. She serves on the editorial boards of Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel Research, Tourism Culture and Communication, and the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and as the Book Review Editor for the Journal of Tourism and Cultural Change. Dr. Santos completed her Ph.D. in Mass Communications at Pennsylvania State University in 2002.
The European Union Center was founded in 1998 with support from the European Commission to serve as the focal point for teaching, research, and outreach related to the European Union. In 2003, the US Department of Education designated the EUC as a Title VI National Resource Center. The European Union recognized the EUC as a European Union Center of Excellence in 2011, and in a global competition in 2015, the center was one of only seven to gain the prestigious designation of “Jean Monnet Center of Excellence” by the European Commission. In addition to promoting scholarly research, strengthening curricula, and educating the next generation of experts on transatlantic affairs, the European Union Center offers a Master of Arts in EU Studies, the first such degree program in the United States.
Dr. Laurence Chalip, head of the department shared, “This is a marvelous opportunity – not just for Carla, but for RST, as it strengthens our continuing connections to international initiatives. Congratulations to Carla as we look forward to working with her in this new role.”
